In the car magazine business, we used to call them “comparos.” Is the new Mercedes-Benz C-Class a better buy than the BMW 3 Series? Maybe you should buy the upstart Genesis G70 or the venerable Cadillac CT4 instead?
Which Trump indictment will do the trick? The Fulton County grand jury’s indictment on Georgia’s RICO charges of the former president and 18 of All the Best People? Either of Special Counsel Jack Smith’s indictments or maybe (remember this?:) New York D.A. Alvin Bragg over hush money to Stormy Daniels?
Wednesday morning, The Washington Post compared the federal indictment, United States v. Donald J. Trump, accusing him of illegally attempting to subvert and overthrow the 2020 election results with The State of Georgia v. Donald John Trump, accusing Trump & Friends over alleged efforts to overturn his defeat to Joe Biden. This is not any sort of WaPo exclusive, of course — every major mainstream media outlet that is not Fox News wants to know which of four indictments might do in Donald J. Trump as he runs for president, or even as he potentially looks out from the Capitol toward the “hugest” live inaugural audience since 2017.
The Post’s comparo warns that Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis’ 98-page, 41-count indictment is so sweepingly big that there is no chance it will go to trial before November 5, 2024, let alone reach a conclusion by then.
So if Trump somehow beats President Biden to an Electoral College victory, Georgia State Police could be knocking on White House doors in 2025 (or later), because Trump can’t pardon himself from a state’s conviction.
The Editorial We cannot say for certain that Fox News hasn’t engaged in such “which indictment?” “what-ifs.” EW is reasonably certain that Fox News will give Trump’s Monday, August 21 press conference in response to the Georgia grand jury’s indictment all the attention it deserves — and then some.
Trump posted Tuesday on his Truth Social site that he will present a 100-page report from his team on “presidential election fraud” in 2020 that should result in all charges being dropped, Politico reported, adding; “Officials in the past have found no evidence of election fraud, but the allegations have spread widely across conservative media since the election.”
So let’s throw the Tesla Model 3 into the comparison with those gas-powered compact luxury sedans. (No, the reference to the EV car company led by Elon Musk is not coincidental.)
Here’s my homework assignment for you, dear reader: What new evidence will the Trump team’s 100-page report reveal? Bonus points for new Trump catch-phrases revealed beyond “witch hunt!”
